James Michael - X Factor 2011 - Part One

At the end of January I was lucky enough to get to photograph musician James Michael, who made it to the live show stage of the X Factor 2011. Since leaving the X Factor he has modelled for http://www.mrporter.co.uk, is continuing to gig and is also currently searching for a record deal.

We began shooting around 11.30am and finished around 8pm. That sounds pretty intense but that includes travelling around multiple different locations and during that time we also went for food at Revolution, Huddersfield. It was a pleasure to work with James and I wish him every success!

Digitals from first film shoot

So when I actually got round to doing a test shoot with film, I was looking through the viewfinder and couldn't help but think I'd be missing out if I didn't capture the colours. The sun and light were really nice that day, and the film I had was only black and white. We were only shooting down the road from where I live so I ran back to get my D90 and do some colour, digital shots.

First Film shoot

These are the photos from my first ever film shoot. I have an idea for a film shoot that I want to do, but wanted to get a little practice in first. This was a test shoot with two of my close friends.

They were taken using a Mamiya 645 1000s, with Ilford Delta 400 film, which were both kindly borrowed from my friend Nick Parker. He also developed these, so big thanks to Nick for that.

I really thought I'd find the whole thing to be more effort than it was worth, but I was wrong. In the end I did go and get my digital, but that was because the colours that day were so nice and I didn't want to miss out. Saying that, I actually enjoyed using the Mamiya more.

Definitely going to continue shooting film when I can.
